Some of us are seasoned activists, but lots of us are new and may be wondering what to do. See the 17 types of activities below and visit tinyurl.com/upcomingactions for ongoing opportunities to engage in the region.

Protest

Make your voice heard and join the vibrant energy of a peaceful protest! Stand with fellow citizens to collectively advocate against rule by king and for democracy. Ask a friend to join you!

Dance!

Turn up the volume and turn out for democracy at a sidewalk dance party protest. Join a joyful and energetic crowd making a powerful statement (against unlawful ICE actions, DOGE, etc.) through the power of dance.

Wave signs

Be a visible force for democracy by waving signs! Join like-minded people bringing awareness through sign waving at major intersections or overpasses.

Attend town halls

Engage directly with your elected officials by attending town halls. Ask questions, share your perspectives, and participate in a vital dialogue that shapes local and national policies.

Display

Wear pro-democracy t-shirts or buttons, display yard signs and window signs, attach bumper stickers, display flags, etc. Visibly displaying pro-democracy messages creates a powerful collective presence, normalizes democratic values, helps us know that we are not alone in the fight and builds our strength as a community.

Visit congressional offices

Make a personal impact by visiting your congressional offices either in Washington, D.C. or in Maryland! Share your concerns and stories directly with staff, ensuring our representatives understand the issues that matter most to you. No need for an appointment. Find your congress members at Congress.gov.

Call representatives

Directly influence policy by calling your representatives! A brief phone call is a powerful way to voice your opinions on current legislation and ensure your concerns are heard in the halls of power. 5Calls.org gives you information on the issues, provides a script to read if you would like, and connects you with your representatives (if you use the phone app).

Join a Pro-Democracy group

Amplify your impact by connecting and building community with like-minded individuals in a pro-democracy group! Collaborate on strategies, learn from experienced activists, and become part of a powerful collective voice for change. Join Indivisible Baltimore County, another Indivisible group, or another local group.

On the Quieter Side…

Educate yourself and promote facts

Combat autocracy by arming yourself with truth. The Trump regime, like all autocratic forces, thrives on misinformation and the suppression of facts. Seek reliable, data-driven, independent new sources such as Heather Cox Richardson, the Meidas Touch Network, and Robert Reich. Educate yourself, then share vital information with friends or via social media. Also, consider joining Indivisible’s Truth Brigade – a community of over 6,000+ individuals working together to disrupt disinformation both online and offline.

Make protest signs

Unleash your creativity and craft eye-catching protest signs! Create protest signs for yourself and/or much-needed signs for others at a sign-making workshop.

Write letters or postcards

Use the power of the pen to influence. Write by yourself or with others through Postcards4Maryland, Postcards to Voters, Turnout Project, or Vote Forward. Letters may focus on pro-democracy issues or may encourage likely democrats to register to vote (FieldTeam6). A personal, hand-written message stands out and can leave a lasting impression on those who receive it.

Take part in the Candle Signal

Place a candle, lantern, or LED light in your window. Leave it there every night as a quiet act of resistance. This is a signal that you see what’s happening (Light up the Nation organized by 50501 Movement).

Verify your voter registration

Be ready to vote before the next election! Make sure your name is still on the voter rolls or register for the first time at voterizer.org.

Boycott

Exercise your consumer power through boycotts! By consciously choosing where you spend your money, you can send a clear message to companies or organizations whose actions don't align with democratic values. The transactional nature of a corrupt administration and their oligarch friends makes this action, particularly impactful. See DEI Watch’s Guide to Corporate Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Actions and Political Spending.

Reach out to friends and family

For like-minded friends and family, share this list with them, invite them to a protest, or ask them to join you at a meeting or event; if they live farther away, encourage them to engage where they are. Link them to pro-democracy organizations like Indivisible. Fight Back with Friends is an Indivisible initiative to reach friends/family and promote activism.

Organize or join an antifascist book club

An Antifascist Book Club brings people together to read, discuss, and act against the rising threats of authoritarianism and fascism. See Veterans Fighting Fascism for more information.

Cultivate joy

In the face of oppression, cultivating joy is a quiet yet powerful act of resistance, a personal rebellion that nourishes the spirit and defies the forces that seek to destroy us and our society. Embrace moments of happiness with friends, family and by yourself.
