Andy Harris: Bad for Free Speech, Bad for Healthcare, Bad for Maryland
AI Generated Image of Harris and Trump on a golf course, but his support and MAGA credentials are authentic!

Congressman Andy Harris, representing the first district of Maryland, should be ashamed of himself. Of course, he’s not. According to Common Sense for the Eastern Shore, he signed a letter in September, urging the creation of a select committee to investigate so-called “left-wing enemies.” Who’s he calling an enemy? Anyone who uses their Constitutionally-guaranteed free speech to speak out against the brutality, corruption, and lawlessness of MAGA and the Trump regime, that’s who. “Follow the money,” this letter urges, as if any patriotic American needs to be paid to stand up for democracy and denounce the authoritarian takeover we’re all witnessing. Andy Harris is bad for free speech.

In a recent telephone town hall, a worried constituent asked Harris about a disabled family member who could soon see their Affordable Care Act premium double or triple. What, exactly, was the GOP’s plan for health insurance? Unsurprisingly, he didn’t have an answer, only replied that he wanted premiums to go down and that Congress “would probably negotiate some off-ramp” (from the Affordable Care Act, I assume) later. This is unconscionable. No one, not even President Obama, ever claimed the ACA was perfect, but many thousands of Marylanders depend on it. Andy Harris is bad for healthcare.

And if you can stomach a quick visit to this “America First” analysis, you’ll see for yourself just how loyal Harris has been to Trump (90.38% GOP alignment). If you can’t, this article from Common Sense for the Eastern Shore displays in a simple graph just how completely out of step Harris is with the rest of our state. Andy Harris is bad for Maryland.

Andy Harris continues to actively work against his District 1 constituents. His views are often aligned with the far-right of his party, which some see as out of step with the district’s mix of rural Eastern Shore, suburban Harford and Baltimore County communities (Maryland Matters). Harris has been criticized for his limited direct engagement with constituents: for instance, his first public “town hall” of 2025 was conducted by telephone, prompting questions about his willingness to hold in-person forums with voters (WYPR). The structural makeup of the district- drawn to heavily favor Republicans- means constituents feel their voices are effectively muted. An analysis noted the district was “conceived by Annapolis Democrats … as a storage locker for conservative Republican votes” which entrenches Harris’s position even amid discontent.
