Throwing Sand in the Gears

Throwing Sand in the Gears
Red "Know Your Rights" card. Spanish on one side, English on the other--many languages available.

Apparently, Trump's "Border Czar" Tom Homan isn't a fan of "Know Your Rights" campaigns. Here's what he had to say recently about ICE efforts in Chicago:

“Sanctuary citizens are making it very difficult to arrest the criminals. For instance, Chicago, very well-educated. They’ve been educated how to defy ICE, how to hide from ICE. I’ve seen many pamphlets from many NGOs: ‘Here’s how you escape ICE from arresting you’; ‘Here’s what you need to do.’ They call it ‘Know Your Rights.’ I call it ‘How to escape arrest.’” – https://newrepublic.com/post/190813/trump-border-czar-homan-immigrants-smarter-ice

Yep, that's the idea! :) Will "Know Your Rights" campaigns stop mass deportation? I guess not, but maybe we can slow them down, throw sand in the gears, make them work harder for it. My personal fistful of sand involves distributing those red "Know Your Rights" cards in my area--Baltimore city and County. A fellow Indivisible Baltimore County member first gave me the idea and prompted me to order a bunch of these cards and begin giving them out. Others have worked with us on the effort, making phone calls, planning distribution, and collaborating in a shared spreadsheet.

I've received nothing but thanks, thumbs up, and big smiles from the restaurants, education facilities, and religious organizations I've given these out to. One woman, in particular, absolutely BEAMED at me today when I walked into her restaurant and asked if she would like a stack of these for her staff and customers. That beautiful smile and obvious gratitude made my day! My plan is to keep collaborating, figuring out how to distribute these cards more efficiently and in greater numbers--more, more more.
